Pet Portrait from Photo — 11 Painted Styles
One photograph, and your pet becomes a painted portrait in your choice of style. See your own pet first, free, and pay only for the one you keep. The rest of this page is the honest part — how it actually works, what it costs, and what it cannot do — so you can decide before uploading rather than after paying.
- No account needed to preview
- No card until you buy
- Credits go on the portrait you pick
How it works
Your photo goes to a hosted AI image model along with a prompt describing the style you picked and an explicit instruction to keep your pet's own coat color, markings, eye color, ear shape and face proportions. The model repaints your pet in that style. In our own testing the preview came back in about 15 to 25 seconds. You do not need an account or a card to get that far; there are 6 free watermarked previews in total, and unlocking one into a high-resolution file without the watermark costs a single credit.
You get the exact image you previewed
Worth stating because it is not how every generator works: unlocking does not re-run the model. The portrait you approved in the preview is the file you download — same image, just without the watermark and at a larger size. Nothing is regenerated behind the scenes, so there is no chance of paying for a version you have not seen.
What it is good at
Preserving identity. Coat color, markings and their placement, ear shape, eye color and face proportions are written into the prompt as hard constraints, which is the thing that actually matters — a portrait that looks like a different animal of the same breed is worthless to an owner. It also copes with awkward source photos: profile shots, lying-down poses and black-and-white originals are usually reinterpreted sensibly.
What it is not good at
Precise composition control. If your photo contains two pets, you may get both — the reference photo usually wins over the composition instruction, but the result varies by photo, which is what the preview is for. It also cannot produce genuinely large print files: portraits are generated at 1024×1024 and enlarged for download, which is fine for a standard frame and not for a poster. And output is probabilistic, so the same photo and style can give different results on different runs.
Why there is a free preview
Because AI output is unpredictable, asking anyone to pay before seeing their own pet would be unreasonable — hence the 6 free previews, which exist so you judge the result on your own animal rather than on our examples. It is also why our refund policy draws the line where it does: a broken or unusable file is refunded, a result you saw in the preview and then chose to unlock is not.
Choosing a photo
- One clear, reasonably lit photo with the face in focus is all that is needed.
- You do not need a professional photo — an ordinary phone snapshot works.
- Photos that are very dark, heavily blurred, or where your pet is small in the frame give the weakest results.
Frequently asked
- Is it free?
- Up to a point. Seeing your own pet in a style costs nothing and does not need an account or a card — there are 6 free watermarked previews in total, enough to judge the result before spending anything, not enough to browse all 11. Unlocking a high-resolution, watermark-free download costs one credit, bought in a one-off pack, and credits are valid for 30 days from purchase. There is no subscription.
- Do you use my photos to train your models?
- We do not use your photographs or generated portraits to train models, and we will not publish them anywhere without your explicit permission. Making the portrait at all does mean the photograph is sent to a third-party image model — that is what generation is — and we send only the photograph and the style prompt, never your name, email or payment details. The full detail is in our privacy policy and terms.
- Which AI model do you use?
- We route generation through a hosted image model rather than running our own — currently one of the Gemini image models. The same model produces your preview and your final file, which is what lets us promise the download matches what you approved.
- Can I print it?
- Yes. The unlocked file is a high-resolution image in four crops — square, 4:5, 3:2 and a phone wallpaper — so you can take it to a local print shop or use an online printer and frame it yourself. That keeps the total well below a commissioned piece and avoids the shipping wait. We do not print or frame pieces ourselves.
- Can I sell the portrait, or use it commercially?
- No — the license is for personal use: printing, framing, and giving it as a gift. Reselling or any commercial use is not permitted, and the detail is in our terms of service. If you need a portrait for a business, that is outside what this site offers.
- Does it work for other pets, or only dogs and cats?
- It works from whatever animal is in the photograph, but PetArtGen is designed and tested primarily for dogs and cats. For other pets, results are less predictable — use the free preview to judge before paying.

See it before you decide
You do not need an account or a card to see your first preview. Each account gets 6 free watermarked previews in total, and a credit is spent only on the portrait you pick to unlock — never on the previews. The file you unlock is the image you approved.
